The elemental preliminary project description (PPD) is an integral and key component of the ASTM UNIFORMAT Standard E1557. It offers a common point of agreement on specifications for all project stakeholders. During the Schematic Design stage, consultants prepare concept drawings and a description (specification) of building systems proposed by each discipline. These documents must be approved by the client and other stakeholders before proceeding with the Design Development stage. FF/180 Practice23 of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) recommends the preparation of a PPD based on UNIFORMAT elements at the schematic design stage to communicate in a clear, concise manner the scope and relationship of major building systems and to expedite approval.
About UNIFORMAT IIThe ASTM E1557 "Standard Classification for Building Elements and Related Sitework - UNIFORMAT II" provides a common structure linking the building program, specifications, and estimates. Its integration in the design process results in improved communications and coordination among all project participants, an accelerated design, and significantly increased productivity. The classification provides the Project Manager with an essential tool to control project scope, cost, time and quality. Return to the UNIFORMAT II page from
